Training for Teaching Assistants
Working in partnership with Employment Training, New Directions Education Limited is offering training to our Teaching Assistants via the Modern Apprenticeship Programme for Teachings Assistants-NVQ Level 3.
- Would I be a suitable candidate?
- You need to be working as a Teaching Assistant for a minimum of 16 hours per week within a school/schools in South Wales.
- Can I achieve this qualification as a Supply Teaching Assistant?
- Yes, as long as you work a minimum of 16 hours per week you can be working within short and long term assignments. Your Account Manager will endeavour to place you in suitable assignments to allow you to achieve your qualification.
- What entry qualifications do I need?
- You must have a least a level 2 qualification.
- What age range of children do I need to be working with?
- Children of any age in reception, primary, secondary or special school
- What does the Modern Apprenticeship Programme consist of?

- NVQ Level 3 for Teaching Assistants
- (Technical) Certificate level 3 for Teaching Assistants
- Key Skill Level 2 in Application of Number
- Key Skill level 2 in Communication
- Key Skill Level 2 in Information Technology
- Key Skill Level 2 in Working with Others
The qualification consists of 4 mandatory units and 6 option units which should be chosen to suit your job role.
- What are NVQ’s?
- National Vocational Qualifications are nationally recognised qualifications developed by National Training Organisations/Sector Skills Councils which represent your area of work.
- What is a Technical Certificate?
- A technical certificate is an award that shows that you have a good understanding of your chosen career. The CCLD technical certificate consists of 5 units, all of which must be completed.
- What are Key Skills?
- Key skills are essential skills that everyone needs to succeed in education, training and the workplace. Successful completion of a key skills course gives you a certificate which is proof that you are competent at those skills.
- How will I be assessed?
- An approved Assessor will visit you in your workplace to assess your practical competence, knowledge and understanding. You will submit a portfolio to reflect your competence in all areas of the qualification. You will agree with your Assessor suitable dates for you to be observed in your workplace and meet once a month to work on reports with your Assessor and fellow Teaching Assistants at New Direction Education Head Office in Cardiff.
People involved in your qualification
- Assessors - You will be provided with one Assessor who is competent in your area of work and who has trained and qualified as an NVQ Assessor. They will support you, plan, review and make a judgment about your competence. They are responsible to the awarding body for the accuracy of their assessment and will record your individual assessment progress.
- Workplace Manager - Head Teacher/Class Teacher of the school you are working in whilst being assessed. Your Account Manager at New Directions Education will liaise with the school to advise them of your assessments.
- New Directions Education> - If you are not in a long term placement your Account Manager will endeavour to place you within suitable placements and will always advise the Head Teacher of the school you will be working in. Your Account Manager will collate feedback from schools to provide to your assessor. If you do not have access to a computer, you are welcome to come to our Head office in Cardiff to use our computers.
